MASTIFFS IN NEED OR DISTRESS

Helping Mastiffs in Need of a Secure Future

This is Louis a 2 year old male  in his cell waiting anxiously for his owners to come and collect him , but they are not going to come for him . They have decided that they no longer want Louis and have signed him over to the local pound.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Louis's temperament he just does not fit into this families plans any more and he is being disposed of without a second thought ;

.We used to use the terms euthanise or put to sleep but that is painting the wrong sort of picture and wrapping the true situation up in cotton wool, so we are now using the term 'kill' as that is what really  happens . The dog is killed.

 Because of the size of mastiffs and the fact that some pounds are wary of the bigger breeds, some of the dogs once  in the pound never make it out .

Luckily some pounds WILL work with rescues and try to locate a space for dogs but everything is on a tight timescale .If somewhere cannot be found then they have no other option but to kill the dog .. The dogs on here were some  of the lucky ones , we managed to get  out of the pound just at the last hour . Sadly for every Louis  we manage to save  there is another mastiff that we dont get to hear  about ......

We are currently being asked to help with a greater number of mastiffs,that are being either handed into local council pounds or being picked up by dog wardens as the dogs owners no longer want the dogs .

The majority of these dogs have absolutely no health or temperament issues ,yet they are being cast aside by uncaring owners .Breeders are refusing to take any dogs back when approached by the owners so that then leaves the dog at the mercy of the local pound.

A dog that is signed over by the owners does not have to be kept for the statutory 7 days , the dog can be killed on the whim of a kennel manager .

Even the dogs that are picked up can be killed if they display what the staff call aggressive behaviour , in the majority of cases the dog is not aggressive at all ,just terrified at finding itself in completely alien surroundings , with noises and smells that it may never have encountered before .

Without places like us these dogs are consigned to be killed.

Currently our finances are stretched to the limit and donations and support towards the rescue have always been minimal , we increasingly are funding the dogs from our own finances and cannot say how long we can continue this for .

To those people that have and do support us we are ever grateful as are the dogs in our care .
